1st set was cool. Being the 1st time they were playing the new tunes out live, there's a certain amount of adjusting in a live situation. Steve was using this new laptop computer for some sequencing. Said that if it didn't work, things were going to be "interesting" on stage. Tom was being Tom, an amazing bass player. Same with Gary and Steve, a couple of kids on stage that make the gig fun and amazing all at the same time. I'm sure by Sat or Sun, they'll be murdering the stuff.

Actually.... by the second set they had already lit a match. Dave's playing was already going slighty inferno. The tunes themselves are monsters. Lotta accents and notes to catch. Slightly different arrangements of older tunes. Talking with Dennis the sound guy, he says that Catalina's is the WORST room not only in L.A., but in the WORLD!! LOL!! (I'm sure he was embellishing it slightly) But I'd almost have to agree with him to a degree. Last time I saw Dave play with Chicks Band, they had this fellow Bernie Kirsch?? I think it was. Some big time recording engineer. He had Dave's "sound" the best I've ever heard him in that particular room. B.D. and big toms sounded like cannons, snare drums intracracies were easily heard. I guess the only way to deal with such a "boomy" room is to just turn it up without taking to "blurr" level.

We were poking fun at Dave after the 1st break. He was limping around because he had stood up wrong or something silly like that. We all broke out our violins and started playing the sympathy tune for the "old man".... WAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!

He took it all jokingly and got back on stage and started an on-slaught. Maybe to pay us back for teasing him. old man........ HA!!

It was good seeing Shedder and we were surprised by the late appearance of our own Steve Holmes. Steve stayed for the rest of the second set, we needed to get home. I'm sure he's got some technical insights to the evening.

Guess I should chime in here. Dave put on a great show, with an impressive turnout out both sets for LA on a Thursday night.
I got a big dose of Weckl last week, I took another lesson with him as well. We talked mostly about left hand stuff. He was showing me specific things about the whole release thing. I can do it with my right hand, but I'm not allowing for any rebound in my left so as a result I'm muscling out all the strokes myself, which I can do 95% of the time actually. After a while though, my LH would kind of run out of gas, which prompted the lesson in the first place. So he showed me a couple excercises invlolving:
- down stoke, opening the hand allowing for the stcick to rebound.
- snap back into position which brings the stick down for another stroke. The snapping is mostly the thumb landing on the side of the index knuckle.

I don't open my left hand much and I'm trying to get used to how it feels, then let it gradually bleed into my playing. We'll see how it goes. It's obviously working for him.
At Catalina's Dave was as nice as could be to everyone that approached him which is always cool.
